Amazon AWD Changes Now in Effect! How a 3PL Can Help Sellers Adapt

If you’re an Amazon seller using Amazon Warehousing & Distribution (AWD), there is an important change you need to know about. As of July 31, 2026, Amazon AWD only accepts sortable inventory that falls below specific size and weight limits. For sellers who rely on AWD for bulk storage and FBA replenishment, these new restrictions could affect how you prepare and route your inventory.
Under the updated requirements, AWD now only accepts sortable items that are:
Under 18 inches long
Under 14 inches wide
Under 8 inches high
Under 20 pounds
What does this mean for sellers with larger or heavier products? Inventory that exceeds any of these limits will not be accepted for new AWD inbound shipments. Instead, those products must be sent directly to standard FBA through Amazon’s Send to Amazon workflow. For sellers with larger or heavier products, these limits may exclude some of their inventory from AWD. Unfortunately, reducing carton sizes isn't always practical because it can significantly increase shipping costs.
· Identifying inventory that falls outside AWD’s new size and weight limits.
· Routing inventory that exceeds AWD's limits directly to standard FBA when required.
· Handling FBA prep, labeling, repacking and carton optimization when practical to prevent unnecessary shipping costs.
The AWD size restrictions are not the only recent fulfillment change sellers need to keep in mind. Since January 1, 2026, Amazon has also shifted responsibility for item preparation and labeling to sellers and their fulfillment partners.
Amazon no longer provides services such as item prep, polybagging or FNSKU labeling. For Amazon sellers, these changes mean taking on more responsibility for inventory preparation and routing. Products must arrive at Amazon’s fulfillment network fully prepared and ready for FBA.
This requirement applies to standard FBA shipments as well as inventory moving through AWD, Amazon Global Logistics (AGL), and Amazon SEND. Units that arrive without the proper labeling or preparation could face:
Shipment refusals or delays
Additional operational complications
Potential loss of reimbursement eligibility if inventory is lost or damaged
Handling FBA prep and labeling to make sure inventory is properly prepared before it reaches Amazon.
Inspecting and preparing inventory before shipment to help reduce the risk of delays or rejected shipments.
If your business uses AWD, now is a good time to review your inventory and fulfillment process. Identify products that exceed AWD's new size or weight limits and determine whether they should be routed directly to FBA.
It is also worth reviewing your FBA prep process. A fulfillment partner with experience in Amazon requirements can handle preparation, labeling, and other requirements before inventory reaches Amazon to reduce delays and keep products moving.
While Amazon is tightening some AWD requirements in the U.S., the program is also expanding internationally. On August 20, 2026, AWD is scheduled to launch inbound bulk storage and automated FBA replenishment in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK.
For sellers operating across multiple marketplaces, that expansion could create new opportunities for centralized inventory management and automated replenishment.
The bottom line: Amazon continues to evolve how sellers manage inventory before it reaches the FBA network. Staying ahead of size restrictions, prep requirements, and routing changes can help sellers avoid disruptions and keep fulfillment running smoothly.
