Target ASN Errors: Understanding the Mistakes That Disrupt Retail Compliance

  • Walmart, Target & Wayfair

Why Target ASN errors derail even well-prepared brands

Target expects clean data, clean labels, and clean receiving. The Advance Ship Notice, or ASN, sits at the center of that system. When the ASN is wrong, Target cannot reconcile what arrives at the dock with what was promised in the file. That mismatch becomes an operational slowdown for Target and a chargeback for the brand. Target ASN errors often come from small mistakes, but those mistakes carry large consequences.

Most teams discover ASN issues only after Target flags them. By then, the damage is done. The shipment may be delayed. The scorecard may take a hit. The brand may lose credibility with the buyer. The emotional toll is real too. Operators want to feel in control. Nothing kills that confidence faster than not knowing why Target rejected an ASN.

Where Target ASN errors usually start

ASN errors often originate long before the file is transmitted. A picking mistake, an incorrect carton count, or a mislabeled pallet becomes an ASN mismatch. When visibility into warehouse processes is weak, the ASN becomes a guess instead of a reflection of the truth.

Joel Malmquist highlighted how strict large retailers can be. He said, "Walmart's pretty intense with their labeling rules. Dick's Sporting Goods is the same; if you don't do it right, you get those massive chargeback." He continued, "And Target's got big routing compliance issues." ASN errors are part of that same ecosystem. Target enforces accuracy because it must keep its network running smoothly.

Visibility prevents ASN errors before they reach Target

To prevent errors, brands need real-time insight into what is happening inside the warehouse. Without that visibility, the ASN becomes a static document built from assumptions. When assumptions collide with Target receiving, errors appear and fines follow.

Maureen Milligan explained the power of true visibility: "What these real-time portals provide our customers is 100 percent visibility." With that visibility, brands can verify counts, confirm picking accuracy, monitor carton building, and create ASNs that match reality.

Scanning ties ASN data to the truth on the warehouse floor

ASNs fail when data is based on manual entry or unverified workflows. Target needs the ASN to represent the shipment precisely. The only way to ensure that accuracy is to scan every movement.

Connor Perkins summed it up clearly: "You want everything to be scanned in the warehouse, nothing done on paper." He also said, "Our clients get best-in-class visibility and transparency. They can see their daily orders, they can see KPIs, and they can see historical transactions." These practices eliminate many of the data gaps that cause Target ASN errors.

Why B2B-ready warehouse systems reduce ASN failures

Target ASN creation depends on the quality of the data feeding the file. If a WMS cannot track inventory accurately, cannot map orders cleanly, or cannot support retailer-specific logic, ASNs will fail. Systems designed only for D2C do not offer the structure or granularity that ASN accuracy requires.

Bryan Wright described the difference between good and bad systems: "A bad WMS system will not track inventory 100 percent as it should." He offered a clear picture of ideal tracking: "It shows the product landed on the dock at 8 o'clock. At 8:10, John picked it up and took it to location XYZ, and at 10 o'clock, we picked two items off of that pallet in the location 1, 2, 3, 4, order ABC, and at 11 o'clock, we packed it, we put it in this box and put this label number on it." That level of detail prevents the data problems that lead to Target ASN errors.

Support determines how fast ASN issues get resolved

When Target updates its ASN rules or when an unexpected error appears, brands need fast, informed help. Slow support forces operators to guess what went wrong. Those guesses create more errors, not fewer.

Joel explained the support model required to avoid those problems: "Every single account at G10 has a direct point of contact... and the result of that is attention to detail on their account, and a commitment to helping them grow." That level of direct accountability keeps ASN problems from spiraling.

Why brands change providers over Target ASN errors

Repeated ASN errors are often symptoms of deeper fulfillment issues. Delayed receiving, inaccurate counts, and limited visibility create unreliable data. When that unstable data reaches Target, the ASN does not match the shipment, and the retailer responds with penalties.

Maureen captured why so many brands leave their previous 3PLs: "Most of the customers who come to us from another 3PL, their challenges have always been access to their data, order accuracy and efficiency, and basically just meeting the committed requirements." She added that inventory often "wasn't getting received and on the shelves in a timely fashion to satisfy customer orders." Those upstream failures turn into ASN mistakes downstream.

Turning ASN accuracy into a competitive advantage

When ASNs are consistently accurate, Target receives shipments quickly, chargebacks disappear, and vendor scorecards improve. Buyers gain confidence. Operations gain stability. ASN accuracy becomes an asset instead of a risk.

With G10's focus on scanning, visibility, accurate tracking, and responsive support, Target ASN errors become the exception rather than the rule. That reliability helps brands grow with Target without losing momentum to preventable compliance problems.
