Maureen Milligan, Director of Operations and Projects, explains the point: "What these real-time portals provide our customers is 100% visibility." In automated order fulfillment, visibility is not a bonus feature. It is a way to reduce interruptions, shorten resolution time, and keep the operation focused on throughput.

When customer visibility improves, the relationship becomes less reactive. Problems can be caught earlier, and decisions can be made with better data.

Automation exposes weak fundamentals

Automated order fulfillment is not a shortcut around fundamentals. If receiving is sloppy, automation will move errors faster. If the item master is wrong, automation will pick wrong. If packaging rules are unclear, automation will not prevent damage or chargebacks. Automation is a spotlight. It reveals weak processes quickly.

Milligan connects technology to performance and scale: "Using newer technologies and tools to improve our performance and reduce our turn times allows us to scale with our customers." That is the right goal. Automation should make growth manageable, not make the operation more brittle.

Automated order fulfillment is best understood as a system that reduces wasted motion, supports accuracy, and stabilizes performance under pressure. Robotics compresses travel time. Scan discipline prevents errors. A strong WMS ties everything together and provides visibility that improves the customer experience.
