Order Tracking With Real Time Updates: Keeping Customers Informed From Click to Doorstep

Order tracking with real time updates matters because customers do not judge you only by delivery speed. They judge you by how informed they feel while they wait. Research shows that shoppers check order status frequently, and when a tracking page looks frozen, they assume a delay or a mistake. That assumption becomes a support ticket, a cancel request, or a negative review.
Many brands learn this the hard way. Fulfillment is running, orders are moving, but the tracking story does not show progress until a carrier scan appears. When scans lag, customers see silence, and silence reads as trouble. Order tracking with real time updates fixes this by showing real warehouse milestones, not just carrier activity.
As Maureen Milligan said, "Most of the customers who come to us from another 3PL, their challenges have always been access to their data, order accuracy and efficiency, and basically just meeting the committed requirements. So we've seen a lot of people come disillusioned by their last 3PL, where their orders weren't getting fulfilled in time, their inventory accuracy was not there, and they were not able to satisfy customer orders." Real time updates help eliminate that disillusionment by showing what is happening right now.
Order tracking with real time updates is only real if the warehouse captures events in real time. If updates are batch-driven or manual, the status will always lag. Customers will still see gaps, and support will still chase answers.
Bryan Wright described what real time truth looks like when he said, "Absolutely. We have portals that show you the data. We have history that shows you all of that tracking. It shows the product landed on the dock at 8 o'clock. At 8:10, John picked it up and took it to location XYZ, and at 10 o'clock, we picked two items off of that pellet in the location 1, 2, 3, 4, order, you know, ABC, and at 11 o'clock, we packed it, we put it in this box and put this label number on it, and all the way through the process onto the truck and to the customer." Those timestamps are what make updates feel real because they are real.
Real time updates are only helpful if they are accurate. That accuracy comes from scan-based workflows where every action is recorded as it happens.
As Connor Perkins said, "You want everything to be scanned in the warehouse, nothing done on paper. You can lose a lot of money in this industry by you know having people ship stuff wrong, or store it wrong, and now it's lost somewhere. So having a 3PL and WMS that is 100% scan-based is crucial." A scan-based operation can deliver real time updates because the system is capturing the truth at each step.
Connor also said, "One of the pain points our clients have experienced with previous 3PLSs is inventory accuracy; maybe their previous 3PL wasn't great at picking the orders accurately. So they were losing money by shipping wrong items or wrong quantities of items." Real time updates cannot fix wrong picks, but scan-based execution helps prevent them, and it makes the record clear when an exception does occur.
Carrier scans are not always immediate. Some carriers delay the first scan. Some handoffs create quiet periods. Some scans batch in a way that makes movement look slow. Research shows that scan gaps are one of the biggest drivers of where-is-my-order contacts.
Order tracking with real time updates reduces that anxiety by showing milestones before the carrier posts. Processing, picked, packed, labeled, and tendered are meaningful steps because they show the order is moving inside the warehouse. When customers can see those steps, they are less likely to panic during scan gaps.
Real time updates are not only for customers. They help internal teams answer questions quickly. A portal that exposes the same events prevents status debates and speeds up resolution.
As Maureen said, "We're in the last stages of developing a new portal that will give customers real-time visibility to their on-time order fulfillment, inventory accuracy, and even inventory levels so that they can monitor those things directly in our systems. They'll have visibility to what the statuses of their orders-are they getting processed as they expect?-and things like that." A portal makes real time updates usable, not just visible.
She added, "A lot of the 3PL customer expectations are that order fulfillment is happening extremely timely, that our inventory is accurate, that we're able to execute on their orders very quickly, and get them shipped the same day. So what these real-time portals provide our customers is 100% visibility." That visibility supports calmer customers and faster internal decisions.
Not every real time claim holds up. Reporting is how you verify that updates are actually timely, consistent, and mapped correctly across systems.
As Connor said, "Our clients get best-in-class visibility and transparency. They can see their daily orders, they can see KPIs, and they can see historical transactions. They can look at a daily level or go into the more granular version where they're looking at transactional history on an item." When you can see transaction history, you can also see whether updates happened when they should have happened.
He also said, "You have easy access to reporting and you can export to Excel, or really any format that you like you know directly from our WMS portal." Reporting access makes it easier to audit update timing and fix gaps.
Support tickets are costly because they are repetitive and time-sensitive. Real time updates reduce tickets by answering questions before customers ask them. They also reduce cancels and refunds driven by uncertainty.
As Maureen said, "We will take in your inbounds, we will get them received and reported back to you within our SLAs, and oftentimes more quickly than what we contracted for. We will ship your orders out the day they're required. And our inventory accuracy is generally right there at that 99.7% that we agreed. So that's one of the areas where we really do excel, and where we've been able to win business." Real time updates help customers see that performance instead of guessing about it.
Many brands adopt real time tracking after they have been burned by unclear data. Customers complained even when orders arrived because the tracking story never felt reliable. Real time updates rebuild confidence by replacing silence with a consistent timeline.
As Maureen said, "For customers who have come to us from a bad 3PL relationship, they experience relief. They're suddenly seeing their business scaling, that the data supports what we agreed to, and then the trust begins to build." Real time updates contribute to that relief because the visibility matches reality day after day.
Customers expect immediate, meaningful updates. Brands expect systems that reduce tickets instead of creating them. Order tracking with real time updates requires real time event capture, scan-based execution, portals that expose the truth, and reporting that supports continuous improvement.
As Connor said, "This is one of our strengths. G10 is on the cutting edge for this kind of transparency and feedback for clients." If your brand wants fewer tickets, fewer cancels, and a calmer post-purchase experience, real time updates are a practical place to focus.
